It’s often said training is everything…
With this in mind, following an independent review of the national property services training package, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has approved new training requirements for people wanting to enter the real estate industry. As of 1 October 2021, only the new training package will be accepted by the OFT as the eligibility requirement for a licence or registration. These new training requirements do not affect people who hold current registrations and licences. This training package will continue to meet the needs of industry and expectations of people using critical real estate services.
The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) was consulted by the OFT on the potential impacts of the new training package. As the industry peak body, we are committed to excellence in teaching, learning and to developing outstanding industry professionals across the full range of real estate disciplines on offer. Integral to that commitment is constantly exploring the academic landscape to ensure our courses and programs reflect the demands and requirements of today’s real estate industry. It’s pleasing to see the new training package not only recognises the significance of the work undertaken by real estate professionals but also better reflects modern day real estate agency practice.
The introduction of higher educational standards provide an enhanced understanding of consumer protection, improved professionalism and ultimately, a higher calibre of educated Queensland real estate professionals. When you’re charged with selling or managing, what’s likely to be our most important asset, people have an expectation for the credentials that qualify you to that role. Put simply, these improvements will result in better education for real estate professionals and ultimately better outcomes for buyers, sellers, landlords, tenants and investors.
From 1 October 2021 anyone wanting to obtain a registration or real estate licence will be required to complete the new training package which includes the following courses:
- Licence upgrade;
- Full real estate agent licence;
- Auctioneer licence; and,
- Resident letting agent.
The new training package does not impact people who hold a current registration certificate or full licence . A transition period in 2021 means the OFT will continue to accept qualifications from the previous training package – the ‘CPP’ training package – until 30 September, 2021.
